May 5 – Estimates of the budget deficit in California range from $8 billion to $20 billion. No one seems to know for sure.

There are two propositions covering Eminent Domain. One broadly forbids government from taking any private property and giving it to another private interest (Prop 98), the other only stops the seizure of owner-occupied homes (Prop 99). REFERENCE
March 6 - Democrat Don Perata led the recall effort against Senator Jeff Denham. The reason, Jeff Denham would not vote for the bloated budget last summer because it was way out of balance.
Now the projected budget deficit is $16 billion.
Now Perata says the he will hold up the next budget unless the legislature raises taxes. Reference. The San Diego Union-Tribune documents the Sacramento’s Funny Numbers, including a 119% increase in revenue in the last 12 years.
The Democrats in Sacramento could not hold down spending. Now they want to raise your taxes.
GUESS WHAT! Fabian Nunez says he could support raising revenue – including selective taxes on the wealthy – to help bridge the state's projected $14.5 billion shortfall. He is also willing to reduce spending by the same amount.
Why not just reduce spending the entire amount?

January 8 -(Sacramento) - California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring tonight issued the following statement concerning Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's State of the State Address.
"Governor Schwarzenegger delivered a home run for Californians tonight.
"The Governor made clear the state's fiscal condition is his top priority and it's the responsibility of our elected officials to fix California's broken budget system once and for all, without raising taxes.
"Californian's are generous. They continue to pay for state government and its seemingly insatiable appetite, but their generosity should not be abused. Californians expect responsibility with their tax dollars. By focusing on prioritizing and controlling state government spending, while resisting the higher taxes demanded by partisan Democrats, the Governor made it clear he will stand up for every California taxpayer."
January 4 - Assembly bill AB X1 1 would provide medical coverage to about 70%of Californians who are permanently uninsured. It passed the Assembly with Governor Schwarzenegger’s approval.
Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata wants an analysis of the $14.5 billion annual cost. How will the impact California’s current projected deficit of $14 billion for this year and next? Will the analysis include an estimate of how many of the individuals to be covered are illegal aliens? Do not count on it.
If Perata goes along with the plan, the voters will have a chance to vote on the measure next November.
December 14 - After two months of excuses, contradictions, and a sprint through a hotel kitchen running from the press, it seems that Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez finally has everyone on the same page with an excuse for the $3,238 in wine he purchased at Cave L'Avant-Garde in the French region of Bordeaux: They didn't accept American Express. “But it did take Núñez's Visa." (Nancy Vogel, "Democratic Party Buys Wine From Núñez," The Los Angeles Times, 12/13/07)
If it took Núñez over two months to figure out what card his $3,238 expense went on and why, how can Californians expect him to figure out California's looming $14 billion deficit? If this is how the Speaker's office will be crunching numbers, Californians should expect to be in for a very long summer."
December 3 - The Fresno Bee was very critical of the California legislature for introducing Proposition 93 in the February 5 election. The Bee opposes Prop 93.

October 23 – The attempt to modify the method of distribution of California’s Electoral College votes in Presidential Elections is on again. If funding can be obtained for signature bounty, it may be on the June 2008 ballot.
The change would allocate one vote to whoever carried each congressional district and two votes whoever carried the state.
REFERENCE.
October 16 – NUNEZ'S FUNNY MONEY Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez has led the fight to expand health care for the uninsured. His wife, Maria Robles, was hired as president of the nonprofit Californians for Patient Care a short time after he introduced his health care reform. This is not illegal but it comes close to the boundary of being ethical. Reference.
This gives the perception of a nonprofit health organization is paying Nunez indirectly. With the Culture of Corruption that now permeates the Democratic Party, such behavior has become acceptable in Democratic circles.
Remember Gray Davis?
October 12 - Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez shares an apartment in Los Angeles with his principal fundraiser, Dan Weitzman. Nunez sees no conflict of interest with such a combination of political influence mixing with political money. See a
San Jose Mercury report.
October 9 - The democratic culture of corruption may extend into California state politics as well.
Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez is under fire for lavish spending of campaign contributions on what may be leisure activities in France, Italy, and Spain, among other places. The Fair Political Practices Commission is investigating.
It must be bad if the LA Times has an editorial on the topic.
And Nunez, who is termed-out this session, is one of the champions of Proposition 93 we will be voting on in February 2008. Prop 93, if it passes, will extend his tenure for an additional three terms (6 years).
Do we need that?

August 28 - BALANCED BUDGET - "With assurances by the governor to use his veto power, this budget spends over $2 billion less than the Democrats' proposal.
"Additionally, Senate Republican's were successful in gaining frivolous lawsuit protection for billions of dollars approved for transportation and levee projects. This budget fully funds education and law enforcement while paying down debt by more than $2.5 billion.
"This is a responsible budget but is not a perfect budget. Even with the governor's promise to veto hundreds of millions of dollars, California is facing a multi-billion dollar deficit next year.
"We need to start addressing next year's problem today. We must find solutions that will achieve a balanced budget without tax increases while protecting vital services like education, public safety and care for the elderly."

August 9 - "Jerry McNerney is again AWOL in the fight against terrorists. Just when America is faced with an increased threat of terrorist attack, McNerney incredibly sides with Nancy Pelosi rather than the members of America's intelligence community, who are on the front lines of protecting our homeland.
"If Jerry McNerney was so intent on being subservient to the San Francisco wing of his party, he should have told us before he was elected.
"Jerry McNerney seems hermetically sealed to Nancy Pelosi, voting with the San Francisco liberal in 92% of all votes. Instead of the 11th Congressional District having a vote in Congress, it looks like San Francisco has gotten two."
California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring

August 6 - An initiative to apportion CA Electoral College votes by Congressional District may be on the February 5, 2008 Presidential Primary ballot. If so, expect a battle royal! Reference
An August 1 posting on Political Vanguard included Congressman James Clyburn (D, SC) response to the question “What do Democrats do if General Petraeus comes in, in September, and says, "This is working very, very well at this point. We would be foolish to back away from it"?”
Clyburn’s reply? “Well, that would be a real big problem for us, no question about that.”
Makes one wonder whose side the Democrats are on.
